St. Albans Cathedral

Chequer Street

The author Coxe in ‘Haunted Britain’ refers to Battlefield House in Chequer Street, but this was demolished during redevelopments and the site is now shops. The sounds of battle could be heard nearby, reportedly on 22nd May each year, being the anniversary of the 1455 battle of the Wars of the Roses, as well as the sounds of chanting monks. The disturbing apparition of “a faceless man wearing a caped greatcoat and beaver hat” was also reported in the house. One wonders if the phenomena remain even if Battlefield House does not.
